Woody3D Tree Engine
Woody-3D

Seems interesting as a SpeedTree alternative. ; ) I already know shadermap pro from rendering systems, which is a superb tool for normal, bump, AO and specularity texture generation from textures(not as good as when built from real high detail objects of course, but awesome nonetheless).

They look nice from afar but up close their planes rotate about your position and look "twirly".
This isn't very hard to implement, just a bunch of planes pointed at the camera, but their animated leaf textures look neat.

Do you think its worth to buy? I mean in comparison with other tree generator apart from SpeedTree?

RE: Woody3D Tree Engine
Woody3D if implemented properly would have MUCH better framerates at high tree densities than SpeedTree or XFrog but lower realism. And it is cheap in comparison wink But once again you'd have to implement it into EE.

From a quick look at the SDK, the leaf block textures (approx 512x512 sequences of moving leaves) would have to be animated in EE. I've never done texture switching inside of EE so I can't say how easy animating the leaves of the implemented trees would be.

I've looked at this tool and I think it could be cool as addition to Esenthel Engine

RE: Woody3D Tree Engine
I just tried the demo too, its okay - not very next-gen; but I really don't like the billboards always facing the camera - its pretty scary, reminds me of tomb-raider 2 chandeliers when you're under them. Plus the leaves could really use alphamaps or something. The leaves should turn to geometry when close to the camera, or at least become fixed flat quads rather than billboards at these distances. Also the way the billboards grow is a bit weird, would be better to fade them in or have something less noticeable. I like how the tree branches and meshes are animated though.

Edit: I'd quite like to see this technique on a forest in realtime: https://mmack.wordpress.com/2010/01/12/s.../#comments

Also, I recommend devs check out this quick lighting hack, very cool:

A very very cool trick! I was actually looking to do something like this! (As i noticed that there wasn't very good shadowing inside my trees! grin Thanks! but I'm worried it will take the leaf attachments off their branches :\

RE: Woody3D Tree Engine
Since we are in the same subject, I am just blur as how we could implement 3rd party SDK such as Woody3D inside of Esenthel (call me inexperience). I just bought Woody3D and still at lost of how we could implement it inside of Esenthel, especially to import the mesh model of woody3d trees into Esenthel since they using their own binary model format.

Any tips of how this can be done? I think this is the same with SpeedTree? Of course SpeedTree 5.x now you can export the model into FBX or OBJ format which is handy but the license is a killer (just too expensive), which leave us with the best alternative, Woody3D. I think Woody3D is awesome piece of software and its really good. The support really reply you to your issue and they really helpful, and I think its worth the money.

I am just too new to this. Please guys any advice would be appreciated.

RE: Woody3D Tree Engine
Didn't realize they you couldn't export to a traditional binary. You'd have to look at the C++ examples they have up.

RE: Woody3D Tree Engine
OK This is a headache. I can't find ways that we could possibly used to import foreign object (i.e. Woody3D Mesh Format) into the Editor (so that I use the compiled Woody3D Trees on the Map). Seriously, any tips or guide would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance smile

RE: Woody3D Tree Engine
Not sure about others but we abandon Woody3D and went with custom made trees which we purchased from various sources.

RE: Woody3D Tree Engine
This makes me wonder if these tree editors could work for plants as well...

Ah! I've also found a few free tree 3d generators which might work ok for people on a budget! I believe that all of these are open-source and free for commercial/noncommercial use.

There is also this if you don't care about the trees you need

RE: Woody3D Tree Engine
I've searched for information about the export from Woody3D and in the Forum the developer said, that static .obj are not supported yet. It should be available in version 1.2. They started developing in april 2011 for version 1.2 but paused it in summer 2011 and did not started developing again. Oficially it's because the developer is working on his other product "shadermap 2" but in the forum their, last of his activities is in early 2011.

It's a pitty, but I think, in near future Version 1.2 Woody3D won't be developed.
