Crash then empty world.....
On "clean all and play all" I got a crash, then when i loaded back up the entire world was empty. I tried both the temp (auto backup) and the regular world file also, both are completely empty and what's more, in the world info it lists the are size as 0, the heightmap resolution as -1 and the 2D path resolution of 0.

I'm trying to keep from freaking out at the moment because we're talking over 200 hours of painstaking work having went into crafting that world. I need to know what's up and how to recover it.

In the folder structure i can clearly see all the area files are still there under edit and game both, however i just get the empty world in the editor.
This sucks because now I basically can't work at all, because i'm terrified if i sync with the data server it'll screw up the data on the data server too.

RE: Crash then empty world.....
I created a new world and copied the contents of the edit folder into the new one. Now i can enter the world in the editor but anytime i try to build/clean/play it crashes out 20% through path generation.

Need a response.

RE: Crash then empty world.....
Update: If I run the DX10 editor path generation get's to a whole 90% then just hangs indefinitely, using 240mb ram and 50% cpu usage for some reason.

Hi,

Quote:then when i loaded back up the entire world was empty.
Building worlds does not make any changes to the "edit" folder.
It only reads the "edit" folder, and generated the "game" folder.
Did you do anything unordinary?
Is your HDD stable, not faulty?
Do you have enough free space?

what kind of crash? did it display any error message? do you remember what it was?

Quote:Now i can enter the world in the editor but anytime i try to build/clean/play it crashes out 20% through path generation.
First - Are you using latest SDK? (few releases ago I've reduced memory usage)
can you display a screenshot from the error? (with any message box visible, and screen from Windows Task Manager showing CPU/MEM usage of the editor process)

How big is your world? How many areas?

RE: Crash then empty world.....
1. No I didn't do anything unordinary.
2. The HDD has been stable but is getting old.
3. 138GB free space

4. Included Image. Most times it just hangs during path generation while using 200mb ram and 50% or so CPU usage forever. Sometimes it crashes like this.

5. I wasn't using the absolute latest sdk, so i updated it and tried again. Same results since, hanging at path generation.

6. (included Image) Today it's only crashing and not hanging so i can't screenshot the cpu usage and memory when it hangs.

7. How can I tell how big the world is or how many "areas" it is? It's a pretty big world but by MMO standards is still quite small.

RE: Crash then empty world.....
Is it possible you could upload the compressed world folder ("edit" without "game") to me, so I could check it manually?
I have already tested building huge worlds (with paths) and they didn't have any problems.

RE: Crash then empty world.....
I'm compressing it right now for you, just tell me where to send it.
Also, what do you consider to be a "huge" world, and also how do I actually tell the size of our world so I can quote it?

RE: Crash then empty world.....
I've sent you PM
right now I'm testing 128x128 area count sized world (with 64 area size, 64 heightmap resolution) building in the Editor

I got your pm and i'm sending it now, however how do I know how large our world is?

RE: Crash then empty world.....
Hi,

I've tested building your world on Debug/Release DX9/DX10 32/64 bit and all work fine.
Perhaps the remaining files cause more memory usage or problems.
Can you send me your full "Data" folder compressed? So I can investigate it.
Thank you

I don't have a data folder.

RE: Crash then empty world.....
data folder is the path you select at editor startup. you must have it.
in C++ it is EE::DataPath

RE: Crash then empty world.....
If you're talking about the root folder, it's 4gb in size.

RE: Crash then empty world.....
Ok, for the moment I'll try to do some more testing using my own data.
I'll put many objects on the world.
Can you send me to e-mail few screens from the Editor with your world loaded? I want to see the complexity of your objects, size and amount of them.

RE: Crash then empty world.....
In the meantime I have 3 different suggestions:

1 if you have your data uploaded on the data server you could temporarily enable access for me so i could check your data

2 do "update visible" (instead of full rebuild ) on many locations of the world and try to find if there is a particular location that always crashes. Narrow down the crash to certain location

3 in the company license you have access to editor sources so you can manually compile it and run in debug mode. Once crash happens capture the screen from visual studio with disassembly and call stack windows enabled. Ask your programmer for help in this. Attach the screen here
