Though not a free tool, Unwrap3d is an inexpensive program that not only offers great unwrapping/uv mapping options, but also works as a great 3d file format converter by using plugins. Includes Import/export plugins to convert to/from Esenthel's most used formats: obj, 3ds, x, ase, ogre xml, check the full list here:

Just tested all of them (except 3ds) in Esenthel's mesh editor and they all load fine.

I second Ultimate Unwrap 3d - a great addition to the toolset.. the UV mapping is good, but the file conversion and manipulation is what I use it for everyday...
